Tompkins County Barn Project

Historic Ithaca launched the Tompkins County Barn Project in summer of 2008 with the goal of documenting the quickly disappearing agricultural buildings of Tompkins County. The project had three parts: an owner-submitted photo contest, an intensive-level survey of rural Tompkins, and a Barn Seminar. As few families continue to farm in the region, barns have become too expensive and impractical to maintain. The Tompkins County Barn Project encouraged an appreciation of our rural landscape and created a lasting record to endure beyond the life of these significant structures.
