In 1984, the State of New York designated Historic Ithaca as a Rural Preservation Company. Under this program, NYS provided funding to non-profit organizations performing housing and community renewal activities statewide. With this designation came a vastly expanded operational capacity. From 1984 to 1990, Historic Ithaca offered a range of preservation services – renovation advice, help in securing financial assistance, workshops – to rural communities in Tompkins County and even compiled survey of vacant structures. The RPC designation was also the beginning of Historic Ithaca’s long-term focus on the celebration, documentation, and preservation of barns.
