Ithaca Downtown Commercial Historic District

Historic Ithaca collaborated with the City of Ithaca and the Ithaca Downtown Partnership in writing the National Register nomination for Ithaca’s Downtown Commercial Historic District. The district, consisting of 64 contributing buildings, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2005. For years, the upper stories of many commercial buildings were in need of rehabilitation. As NYS Building Code allows for exceptions to new construction regulations in historic buildings, this designation allowed for the revitalization of these vacant and neglected spaces, thus preserving the district’s historic fabric and drawing more people into Ithaca’s historic downtown.
