Barns

Following its designation as a Rural Preservation Company by the State of New York in 1984, Historic Ithaca began to focus on barns in Tompkins County. For many years, Historic Ithaca assisted owners in maintaining their threatened barns, and in some cases, rescued barns from demolition by moving them to different sites for adaptive reuse. In later years, barn work continued through HI’s Adopt-a-Barn program, creation of a Tompkins County barn inventory, and, as a member of the NYS Barn Coalition, sponsorship of “Barns!” events. Historic Ithaca is committed to the preservation of significant barns as an integral part of New York State landscape and heritage.
