When the Tompkins Center for History and Culture (TCHC) opens in May 2019, it will be the first of its kind in the county: a place for various local cultural and arts groups to showcase area heritage for residents and visitors. Spurred by the need of The History Center in Tompkins County to find new digs and inspired by the bicentennial celebrations of 2017, the county purchased the former Tompkins Trust Company property on North Tioga Street on the block known as Ithaca’s Bank Alley in 2018. After renovations are complete, The History Center, Community Arts Partnership, and the Ithaca/Tompkins Convention and Visitors Bureau will all have public exhibit and retail space on the ground floor of the Center. A variety of community partners, including the Wharton Studio Museum, the Dorothy Cotton Institute, the Discovery Trail, will have office space on the building’s upper floors.

Join us on a guided tour of the Tompkins Center for History and Culture before it opens. You’ll have an opportunity to explore the history and architecture of the historic buildings that make up the complex, including the former County Clerk’s Office built in 1863 and the Ithaca Trust Company’s former headquarters completed in 1896. During the tour, you’ll be able to stroll through the old bank vault, peer into the upstairs offices and learn about their previous occupants, and walk through the space where Cornelia Ackley once sold books and stationery.
