Historic Ithaca needs your help to locate carriage houses in Tompkins County!

This summer, Historic Ithaca is conducting a survey of carriage houses in Tompkins County.  These utilitarian structures were built to house horse-drawn carriages and sleighs.  They are found in both urban and rural settings and range in decoration from simple to ornate. Many of the carriage houses that survive today have been converted to use as automobile garages.  Others have been given new life as residential or commercial spaces.

Historic Ithaca is mapping the location of surviving carriage houses in preparation for a fall program celebrating carriage houses and their history. The purpose of the survey is to gain a better understanding of Tompkins County’s carriage houses and how they are being used today.

The survey is being conducted by Caitlin Schickel, a summer intern at Historic Ithaca, through a grant provided by Bryn Mawr College.

Historic Ithaca is asking for help in identifying the locations of carriage houses in the area.  Anyone with information is encouraged to call (607) 273-6633 or email kristen@historicithaca.org
