Now Accepting Nominations for 2010 Preservation Awards
Awards to be presented at Historic Ithaca's Annual Meeting on May 19
Every year Historic Ithaca, Inc. presents awards for sensitive restoration and preservation projects within Tompkins County. From large-scale restoration projects to smaller repairs and maintenance, these awards recognize responsible stewardship of the built fabric of our community. Any preservation, restoration, rehabilitation or adaptive reuse project completed within the past two years may be nominated for a 2010 award.

Japanese Woodworking Workshop Series
Led by carpenter Peter Wiedmann
Part 1: Introduction to Traditional Japanese Woodworking Tools
April 8, 5:30 to 6:30pm at 212 Center Street
This class is for anyone interested in learning about the use and care of traditional Japanese woodworking tools. We will discuss saws, shisels, planes, sharpening stones, and some of the other hand tools in use today. $10 ($8 for Friends of Historic Ithaca).

Part 2: A Sharpening Primer: Chisels and Plane Blades
April 29, 6:00 to 8:00pm at 212 Center Street
This class will focus on sharpening chisels and plane blades. Eastern and Western tools will be used to compare their effectiveness on different types of wood. Participants may bring chisels, planes, and wood cutting boards that need tuning up. $25 ($20 for Friends of Historic Ithaca).

Part 3: Japanese Joinery: Design and Build
May 13 and 20, 6:00 to 8:00pm and May 22, 10:00am until installation complete at 212 Center Street
In these three sessions, participants who also attended the previous sharpening class will design and build a section of fence that will be installed on the grounds of Historic Ithaca on the final day of class. Topics to be covered include: lumber selection, joinery, layout, cutting, and installation. Part 2 is a prerequisite to Part 3. $75 ($65 for Friends of Historic Ithaca).

Help is Available for Owners of Historic Buildings!
Ask us about Historic Properties Tax Credits
Your property may qualify if it is in a designated historic district or if it is individually listed on the state or national registers.
The New York State Historic Residential Properties Tax Credit Program will cover 20% of qualified rehabilitation costs of owner-occupied historic houses, up to a credit value of $50,000. The NYS Historic Commercial Properties Tax Credit will cover up to 20% of qualified rehabilitation costs up to a credit value of $5 million.

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Learn how to conduct an annual inspection of your home and develop a yearly maintenance schedule.
This series of classes is offered on the third Saturday of each month. No registration required. $5 suggested donation.
