City Centre project for the State Street Triangle siteThe Newman Development Group, a Vestal-based real estate firm, presented preliminary plans for the development of State Street Triangle (301 E. State St.) called City Centre. They proposed a nine-story, v-shaped, mixed-use building with +/- 254 apartments, 10,600 SF of commercial rental space and 71 underground parking spaces. Because it is two stories smaller, has some parking and is not focused on student housing, the developers hope to receive a more favorable public reaction than the problematic Campus Advantage project that was withdrawn earlier this year. Historic Ithaca expressed its opposition because the size and massing of the proposed building is not compatible with the existing context. The building would create an urban canyon with a confined, restricted view along Aurora and State Streets. Some members of the Planning Board expressed concerns about the building footprint and questioned whether the building was different enough from the previous proposal to avoid public outrage.
