The Zenas King Bowstring Truss Bridge

The Zenas King Bowstring Truss Bridge, located in Newfield, was built in the 1870s. King Iron Bridge and Manufacturing Company built over 10,000 bridges in the US, but the Newfield bridge is one of only five left in New York State. Historic Ithaca assisted Tomkins County Public Works and the Town of Newfield – in particular its champion Karen Van Etten – in preserving this structure. Support from the Newfield community was tremendous, from in-kind services and materials, to financial contributions from adjacent landowners. The bridge now stands as a living reminder of the evolving transportation network of the late 19th century and provides a footbridge for children on their path to school.
